2022 Happy Last Year
The Return to Depth
After the pandemic years narrowed the world, 2022 did not reopen it with speed. It reopened it with scale: a terrier's first birthday at the edge of the world, ancient stones in Orkney, old books in Dublin, American institutions, poker decisions, and the realization that fewer stories can carry more weight.
2022 was not a return to normal. It was a return to depth.
The old instinct was to cover distance. The new one was to notice scale: one year in a dog's life, five thousand years in a stone circle, centuries inside a library, seconds inside a poker decision.
The year moved between remote islands, old universities, national myths, conference halls and card tables. The locations were different. The question underneath them was the same: what deserves attention when attention has become finite?
Skyelark turned one at the edge of the world.
The year began on Fair Isle, where distance had already become routine and weather still made the rules. Skyelark's first birthday compressed an extraordinary first year into one small animal: five months in America, seven months in England and Scotland, and an island home surrounded by sea.
Her story was the simplest and best opening for 2022. Courage did not need to announce itself. It looked like a Scottish Terrier waiting for a ferry, meeting ponies and cattle, and treating the far edge of the map as home.
Three countries, 365 days, and one perfect island home.
Tiny paws, a transatlantic route and no idea how large the first year would become.
A year in motion
America, England, Scotland and the island at the edge.
The island becomes home

Island introductions
A Scottish Terrier meets Shetland ponies with curiosity and respect.
Friendship ignores categories
Skyelark and Carlos prove that scale is not the same thing as distance.
The first lesson of 2022 arrived on four short legs: home is not where the journey stops. Home is where curiosity remains safe.
The archive became more selective.
Two April visual essays marked a transition in the way the year was being recorded. The impulse to document everything began giving way to curation. The question was no longer, What happened? It was, What remains meaningful after the moment passes?
That shift became the operating principle for the rest of the year. Fewer posts. Stronger signals. Less narration of movement and more attention to the ideas hidden inside it.
Trinity College turned history into atmosphere.
Dublin offered a different kind of island depth. Trinity College held centuries inside courtyards, stone, shelves and names: Swift, Wilde, Beckett, Stoker, Yeats, Joyce nearby in the wider city. The institution's religious origins and later intellectual reach made it less a museum than an argument carried forward.
The Long Room, the Book of Kells and Ireland's literary inheritance made reading feel physical again. Knowledge was not floating somewhere in the cloud. It had weight, smell, architecture and guardians.
A university as archive, contradiction and living inheritance.
Wilde's old college, still producing the pressure of possibility.
The 2022 visit carried an earlier Dublin memory inside it.
The institution
Four centuries of education, exclusion, change and intellectual reach.
The inheritance
The literary atmosphere surrounding Swift, Wilde, Beckett and the wider Dublin tradition.
America was still fabulous, even when the birthday suit needed ironing.
The Fourth of July offered affection without innocence. A country can be loved without being idealized. It can be celebrated and examined in the same sentence.
That was the American note in 2022: loyalty complicated by evidence, gratitude mixed with critique, and the refusal to confuse patriotism with silence. The flag remained a symbol large enough to hold both pride and repair.
Love that cannot survive honest inspection is branding. Love that asks for repair is belonging.
Orkney made the year feel briefly geological.
The Ring of Brodgar stood on Mainland Orkney as a correction to modern urgency. The stones had survived weather, belief systems, politics, ownership and explanation. They did not need to hurry because they had already outlived the people who first arranged them.
Walking among them changed the unit of measurement. A year that had felt important became one thin ring inside a far older story. The result was not insignificance. It was relief.

The island opens slowly, under northern weather.

Stones arranged before the modern world learned to call itself modern.

The circle does not explain itself. It makes explanation feel temporary.

The island returns the traveler to proportion.
The island and the weather
A landscape shaped by exposure, survival and time.
Inside the circle
Neolithic scale interrupts the tyranny of the present.
The range and the poker table became two forms of honest terrain.
Home on the range with Sarah and Skyelark brought the year back from deep time to shared time. The point of travel was never only arrival at the extraordinary. It was returning to ordinary companionship with attention restored.
Poker offered the intellectual counterpart. The table punished certainty, exposed incomplete models and turned Feynman's useful skepticism into practical doctrine: do not confuse the name of a thing with understanding it. A hand was not won because the story sounded good. It was won—or lost—through probabilities, position, information and disciplined action.

Sarah and Skyelark: the year measured not by distance, but by company.

Poker reduced philosophy to action under incomplete information.
Ordinary paradise
Shared ground after the old stones and open water.
The company kept
The deepest part of a journey is often who remains beside you.
A label for a hand is not a model of the opponent.
Probability gives disciplined shape to what cannot be known.
A bet converts an opinion into a consequence.
Harvard looked backward. DevLearn looked forward. Las Vegas held both.
October joined two American systems of belief. Harvard represented inherited authority, ritual and the production of elite confidence. DevLearn represented a newer faith in tools, design, learning technology and the possibility of changing how people build capability.
The route from Cambridge to Las Vegas was more than geographic. It moved from the established fortress to the experimental floor. One system reassured through history. The other sold the future in exhibition halls. Both required the same question: does the institution produce status, or does it produce useful judgment?

Harvard as a ritual of reassurance and a factory for confidence.

Tradition creates pressure before anyone opens a book.

From old authority to the neon marketplace of new ideas.

Learning technology under casino light: invention, commerce and useful friction.

The future of learning arrives first as a conversation, a prototype and a sales pitch.
Ritual and reputation
The institution as symbol before it becomes experience.
Inside the fortress
The visual language of inherited excellence.
The experimental floor
Learning design leaves the ivory tower and meets the marketplace.
Prestige tells you where authority has accumulated. Performance tells you whether the authority still works.
2022 replaced the itinerary with a set of instruments.
Fair Isle supplied belonging. Dublin supplied inheritance. America supplied contradiction. Orkney supplied scale. Poker supplied uncertainty. Harvard supplied institutional power. DevLearn supplied experimentation.
Together they changed the function of the annual review. It was no longer a list of places reached. It became a record of instruments acquired: patience, attention, skepticism, probability, gratitude and the ability to hold admiration and critique at the same time.
Stand beside something older than urgency.
Record less. Notice more. Publish what survives reflection.
Hold opinions strongly enough to act and lightly enough to update.
The world returned by becoming deeper, not larger.
2022 began with Skyelark at the edge of the world and ended between Harvard's inherited authority and DevLearn's restless future. Between those points stood old books, older stones, an unfinished country, a poker table and the people who made movement worth recording.
The return to depth was the real return.
